Professor K. C. Ma has returned to be the Visiting George Professor of Applied Investments. Dr. Ma completed his PhD in Finance in 1983 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He obtained his rank as a Certified Financial Analyst in 1988. Dr. Ma has an extensive background in academics as well as professional background in financial and quantitative research, portfolio management, investment officer, and hedge fund management. He has an equally impressive list of publications within the fields of economics, investing, finance and accounting, futures markets and portfolio management to name just a few. In 1995, Dr. Ma founded KCM Asset Management Group, Inc. He has been Director of Quantitative Research for Ned Davis Research, Inc. and a hedge fund manager for George Weiss Associates, Inc.
Dr. Ma has incorporated several "hands-on" ventures for our Roland George Investments Program students. One of the favored activities they look forward to each spring is participating in the national RISE Symposium at the University of Dayton, Ohio, which includes an investments competition among schools that have student-managed investment funds. During spring break, the class has also toured the financial district in New York City. In early 2010, a team of our investments program students competed in the first annual Florida Investment Research Challenge, a preclude to the Global Investment Research Challenge sponsored by the Orlando Society of Certified Financial Analyst Institute. Our team during Spring 2011 won first place in this challenge and went on as semifinalists for the national competition in Omaha, Nebraska. They were privileged to meet and speak first hand with Warren Buffett, the main speaker. It was a thrilling experience for them. This Spring 2011, a team also attended the first annual G.A.M.E. (Global Asset Management Education) Forum held at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT, where they took first place for Fixed Income, another impressive accomplishment.
