Joshua Stanley Named Assistant Professor of Practice

Joshua Stanley, EdD, brings more than a decade of experience as a counselor educator, administrator, and clinician to Stetson's Counselor Education faculty.

Stetson University has appointed Joshua Stanley, EdD, as an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Counselor Education. His appointment begins this fall.

“We are honored to welcome Professor Stanley to our faculty,” said Bradley McKibben, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Counselor Education. “His experience in higher education and clinical practice will be an incredible asset for our students.”

Stanley comes to Stetson with a wealth of experience spanning higher education, P-12 school counseling, and clinical practice. He most recently served as Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness and Accreditation at Capella University, capping a 12-year tenure there that also included roles as faculty member, Program Chair, Interim Assistant Dean of Counselor Education and Family Therapy, and Dean of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Stanley said, “I am delighted to join Stetson this fall and return to what originally brought me into higher education: working directly with students. While my years in university leadership were deeply rewarding, my heart has always been in teaching, clinical supervision, and direct practice. Stetson has a fantastic reputation for rigorous preparation standards in a relationship-centered learning environment, and I am excited to walk alongside our graduate students as they acquire knowledge and develop skills to make a lasting impact for the communities we serve.”

Prior to his work in higher education, Stanley held a range of counseling and educational leadership positions, including elementary and high school counselor, school counseling program specialist and dual-enrollment coordinator, and coordinator of secondary intervention and high school transition for the Tennessee Department of Education.

Stanley earned his doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from Argosy University in Nashville, Tennessee, and a master's degree in counseling from Austin Peay State University, also in Tennessee. He also completed additional post-graduate coursework in human sexuality and systemic couple and family therapy. Stanley is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida, a National Certified Counselor, and an Approved Clinical Supervisor. In addition to his academic and administrative work, he maintains a counseling practice serving children, adolescents, and adults in the Orlando area.

Stanley's appointment reflects the department's continued commitment to strengthening its faculty and expanding opportunities for students in counselor education.
