Advancement to Candidacy
Yearly in February
Students no longer need to complete the Advancement to Candidacy application and narratives.
The office of Graduate Studies compiles a list of eligible students each spring for faculty to review during the annual student review meeting. This faculty meeting is an opportunity for the professors to review and formally assess the work you have accomplished as a counselor education student at Stetson University. Upon a student’s completion of 18 hours of coursework, students become eligible to Advance to Candidacy. Faculty make advancement decisions based on the rubric criteria. The Department notifies students by letter when they advance to candidacy. Failure to meet the rubric criteria at a score of three (3) or higher results in remediation of the student or dismissal from the program.
The orientation session will help you learn about what to expect during your internship and provide tools and tips to maximize your experience. all students are required to attend at least one orientation.

NCC/NCHMCE Semester Testing Schedule
Registration is required six months in advance. This Exam is not given on campus. You must have a master’s degree in mental health counseling or related to the practice of mental health counseling from a regionally accredited institution before you are permitted to take the examination. You can no longer take the exam before you graduate and you must register for the exam before you graduate to get the student discount.
Students can sign up to take the exam before graduating and the discount student price is $335. From that point your application is good for two years from the time you pay, meaning you can extend the time when you take the exam for up to 2 years without having to repay. If you wait and sign up after you graduate, you will have to pay the full price of $375.00. Again, that application is good for two years.
Florida Licensure law (and a few other states) say that in order for those state licensure boards to accept your NCMHCE exam scores for state licensure – you must take the exam after you graduate, not before. You could still take the test before you graduate - but it won’t count towards FL State Licensure.
Email Counselor Education to request registration instructions.
- April: register for date and time (deadline to register is December 5)
- October: register for date and time (deadline to register is June 12)
This option for taking the test is only available to our degree-seeking students. If you are interested in signing up for the exam or need more information, you can view information at the Center for Credentialing and Education.
MHC exam applicants are not required to have Board approval prior to taking the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination. After passing the NCMHCE, your transcript and scores will be forwarded to the FL Board.
