Insurance Requirements

Stetson University's insurance requirements vary by population, group, and scope of the work or event. A brief overview of insurance requirements are listed below. If proof of Stetson's insurance is needed, please complete the COI Request Form

Registered Student Organizations

Organizations Housed On Campus

Fraternities, sororities, and religious-based organizations housed on campus are required to provide a certificate of insurance indicating the following minimum coverages:

Commercial General Liability Insurance

Coverage shall include bodily injury and property damage liability in an amount not less than $1,000,000 combined single limit, per occurrence. Insurance coverage must include host liquor liability, sexual abuse and hazing coverage. 

Certificates of Insurance must name "Stetson University" as additional insureds. Certificates shall be issued to:

The requirements of insurance do not constitute an acceptance of any responsibility for, or duty to regulate, specific conduct or activities of the organization or its members by the University. All organizations and members are responsible for their own actions and activities.

Student organizations with a national affiliation are required to provide a certificate of insurance indicating the following minimum coverages:

High-Risk Events

In the rare occasion that a high-risk event is approved to be hosted by a registered student organization, the organization will be required to purchase additional insurance coverage. Coverage requirements will be determined by the Office of Risk Management and the Office of Student Development and Campus Vibrancy.

Facility Users - Outside Groups

Facility Users must furnish a certificate of insurance evidencing its current policies of:

General Liability Insurance

Coverage shall include bodily injury and property damage liability in an amount not less than $1,000,000 combined single limit, per occurrence. If the event includes alcohol, $1,000,000 in liquor liability coverage will be required.

Certificates of Insurance must name "Stetson University" as additional insured and shall indicate the dates of the applicable events. Certificates shall be issued to:

The certificate must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the requested event dates or the University reserves the right to cancel the reservation.

If the facility user does not possess the above liability coverage and/or cannot submit a Certificate of Insurance as specified, they shall be required to purchase a temporary event liability policy as determined by the Office of Risk Management. The facility user will be responsible for purchasing the policy and paying the premium. Proof of coverage must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the requested event dates or the University reserves the right to cancel the reservation.

Vendors, Contractors and Service Providers

Vendors, contractors, and service providers coming onto University premises to complete work or provide services are required to have insurance. A certificate of insurance shall be issued to the University and received prior to the start of the contract. The following minimum insurance standards shall apply:

Commercial General Liability Insurance

Coverage shall include bodily injury and property damage liability in an amount not less than $1,000,000 combined single limit, per occurrence.

Automobile Liability Insurance

Vendors, contractors, and service providers who will drive onto Stetson University property are required to provide proof of automobile liability coverage in an amount not less than $1,000,000 per occurrence for bodily injury and property damage, including owned, hired and non-owned vehicle coverage.

  • For Charter Bus Companies, the minimum Automobile Liability coverage required is $5,000,000.

Workers Compensation

Statutory limits are required.

Professional Liability

This insurance requirement applies when a contractor has a professional designation or license and/or is providing professional services. Not less than $1,000,000 per occurrence and aggregate.

If a product or service, in the opinion of the Office of Risk Management, represents an unusual or exceptional risk, additional insurance may be required.

Coverage amounts and limits are minimum requirements and in no way limits the liability of the vendor, contractor or service provider. Renewal certificates of insurance shall be provided annually until all work is completed and the contract is terminated.

University Students

Health Insurance - Domestic Students

Health Insurance - International Students

Information on health insurance recommendations for domestic students can be found on the Stetson Health Services website. Students attending the University on a J-1 Visa must provide proof of insurance to WORLD prior to matriculation.

Student Property & Liability Insurance

The University Risk Management and Insurance Association (URMIA) is an international non-profit educational association serving colleges and universities with the core purpose is to promote the advancement and application of effective risk management principles and practices in institutions of higher education. As part of URMIA's risk management program, students at member institutions have access to purchase property and liability coverage with variable policy limits and low deductibles. 

The URMIA Student Property policy was designed to help protect your property and property entrusted to your care. The Liability policy, which is offered as an add-on, is to help protect you from claims made against you for bodily injury or property damage to other people or their property for which you are found liable. The property policy covers your property everywhere in the world. The Liability policy applies to claims made against you while a resident at the location shown on your policy as the residence location.
