Dr. Sitler is a professor of World Languages and Cultures, with a focus on Spanish. He has been an ardent environmentalist for over forty years. During his past 25 years at Stetson, he has initiated or led numerous efforts at campus greening including the Environmental Task Force, Green Stetson, and the Environmental Responsibility Council. His recent environmental work has focused on the Florida Aquatic Gems project which highlights extraordinary water features within a 30-mile radius of the Holler Fountain on the DeLand campus. He had the great fortune to serve as the Environmental Fellow faculty adviser during the sabbatical leave of Dr. Abbott. As this assignment comes to a close, he shares, “I myself with renewed optimism about Stetson's environmental future and feel freshly inspired by the dedication and work ethic of the Fellows.”

Time spent mentoring the Fellows: 4 years (2014-18)

Dr. Abbott is the inaugural Environmental Fellow Mentor. He has been a fixture in campus environmental engagement since his arrival at Stetson in 2005 as a member of Stetson’s Environmental Responsibility Council, the lead for campus-wide greenhouse gas emissions reporting, and consultant to the current Environmental Working Group. He worked with the Values Council and others to establish the Environmental Fellowship as a pilot program to be expanded into other value areas. Dr. Abbott has described working with the Fellows as “one of the most personally rewarding experiences of my career. The traction they have realized in moving environmental concerns forward is the best I have experienced at any university.”
