Accommodations Types
Accessibility Services assists in accommodating students in various aspects throughout their experience at Stetson. The following are a list of the different areas student may receive accommodations.
The following examples are only a small sample of the accommodations that could be offered. All accommodations are tailored to individual student needs and based on documentation and student report. If you have a student that you feel may require accommodations, please have them reach out to the Accessibility Services Center lcoated in the Hollis Family Student Success Center.
Accessibility Services works with Public Safety and Facilities & Maintenance to ensure that Stetson's campus is accessible to all students. Some students require support accessing the campus. Campus access includes parking, and walking/navigating around the campus and public spaces.
Classroom setting accessibility accommodations can look very different depending on needs. This could include physical classroom access such as a specific desk or chair, consideration for attendance or being allowed to leave the classroom early or arrive a few minutes late, or priority registration. More academic based classroom support would include the use of note taking software, alternative presentation format, alternative text, or access to a professor’s notes. Support in the classroom setting for mental or emotional well-being could include the ability to take breaks during class, use of noise cancelling headphones or ear buds, or not being called on in class.
For Dining, Accessibility Services partners with the Dining offices to problem solve a student’s particular dining needs be it allergy related or a specific diet. See the Dining Services website for more information.
Within the area of residence life, accommodations can be offered to support a student’s physical, mental and emotional disabilities and provide an environment conducive for them to access their education. Accommodations could include a single room, a private bathroom, an ADA accessible bedroom/bathroom, or the ability to have an Emotional Support Animal(ESA). Accessibility Services works with the Residential Living and Learning Office for all requests.
To provide access to their tests and exams, students can have a wide range of accommodations. Some options available include: extended time, the ability to test in a distraction reduced environment, use of noise cancelling headphones or earbuds, breaks during testing, or spreading out final exam days.
Stetson University and the Accessibility Services Center are committed to supporting the letter and spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Title IX; we strive for equal and uninterrupted access to all our curriculum, programs and services.
If you are experiencing a temporary disabling condition or pregnancy, you can contact the Accessibility Services Center at (386) 822-7127 or at [email protected] to schedule an appointment to discuss resources and supports.
The Accessibility Services Center can help you determine if any official accommodations need to be recommended to ensure equal access to the educational environment; in order to receive accommodations for a temporary disabling condition or pregnancy, you must supply appropriate documentation of the condition or pregnancy to The Accessibility Services Center. Documentation of the condition or pregnancy must be from a licensed, credentialed provider that is monitoring the condition or pregnancy. This documentation can be provided via one of the following methods:
Reasonable accommodations will be approved based on the documentation and the interview with staff at the Accessibility Services Center
Assistive Technology
The Accessibility Services Center (ASC) works to leverage available technology resources to increase the accessibility of our classrooms and campus in general. This includes educating students on accessibility resources available via their Office 365 account and loaning needed software and hardware to campus constituents. Our hope is that these resources will provide the users with greater autonomy to engage fully with the incredible learning opportunities available on our campus.
Due to limited inventory, all available software and hardware loan options are designed for brief use. If an individual believes they would benefit from the use of any of these personal assistance devices, the ASC would recommend that the individual purchase one through the appropriate vendor for their continued personal use.
All Stetson faculty, staff, and students are provided with an @stetson.edu email address with an associated Office 365 account. This account grants access to a number of Microsoft products (including 5 free downloads of Microsoft Office). Microsoft is committed to the accessibility of their products and have been working diligently to create new add-ins and features including text-to-speech, live captioning, and an immersive reader. ASC staff are available to consult with student on ways to utilize these features to ensure access and support their success in the classroom.

The Phonak EasyPen and MyLink provide a direct audio connection between a speaker and a participant who is hard of hearing. The Phonak EasyPen microphone hangs on a lanyard around the neck of the presenter. The MyLink receiver can be automatically connected to a hearing aid via T-coil, or an available audio jack within the MyLink can be connected to headphones. This is ideal for larger presentations, campus tours, and other environments where there may be a great deal of ambient noise.
Four (4) EasyPen and MyLink kits are available for check-out at the library circulation desk with a valid Stetson ID. The kit includes the necessary equipment and some helpful how-to materials. The loan period for the kit is 24 hours. Failure to return loaned equipment or returning damaged equipment may result in fines and/or holds on the individual's account.
The Livescribe Echo Smart Pen allows an individual to take handwritten notes while audio recording the presentation/lecture. The audio recording is tagged based on the individual's written words and can be quickly navigated to find the necessary information within the recording.
Introduction video to the Echo Smart Pen
The Echo Smart Pen is currently available only for students registered with the ASC for an audio recording accommodation. The ASC will provide a list of approved students to the library. Students can check out a Smart Pen for up to one month at a time. Failure to return loaned equipment or returning damaged equipment may result in fines and/or holds on the individual's account.
Glean Audio NoteTaker is a software program designed for the user to audio record the lectures and type any personal notes next to the audio recording. Glean creates "chunks" of audio based on the speaker's natural pauses and allows the user to color code important sections of audio for later review. Glean is currently available only for students registered with the ASC for an audio recording accommodation.
