Engage in discussions, share insights, and participate in practical activities that will enhance your understanding of guitar pedagogy. Let's come together to celebrate the art of teaching and learning the guitar!

The workshop takes place on Saturday, April 20, 2024, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., in the Tinsley Room 132 of Presser Hall on Stetson’s DeLand campus at 419 N. Woodland Blvd. DeLand, FL 32723.

The day is set to commence at 10 a.m. with a hands-on workshop facilitated by Orlando Roman, tailored for the local community of guitar teachers and students. The workshop will delve into the nuances of "guitar instruction: past, present, and future," providing an insightful exploration of teaching methods over time. Following the lunch break, Ms. Perlak will take the lead in a master class. The afternoon session will culminate with a question-and-answer session from 3:30 to 4 p.m., offering participants an opportunity to engage directly with the instructors.

With performances that are deeply personal and express a breadth of tradition, guitarist Kim Perlak has been recognized as an inspired voice in American classical music. Her playing was praised by The Austin-American Statesman as, “thoughtful, enchanting, vivid…a songwriter’s circle without the lyrics,” and by another Austin reviewer as, “moving…the most patriotic thing I’ve experienced in many months.”  Her performances of new classical works and collaborations with jazz and traditional players have been featured on National Public Radio, at the Yale Guitar Extravaganza, and at Boston GuitarFest. Kim is the chair of the Guitar Department at the Berklee College of Music, where she has served in this position since 2018. She holds degrees from The University of Texas at Austin (DMA ’08), Yale University School of Music (MM ’01), and Stetson University (BM ’98).

Critically acclaimed virtuoso guitarist, Orlando Roman, was brought up in a musically gifted family of eight and began to play the guitar at the age of five.  Orlando Roman’s performances have garnered acclaim for their “virtuosity, exceptional musicality, and meticulous attention to detail.”  He is a graduate of Stetson University Peabody Conservatory, Florida State University, and the Royal Conservatory in Madrid, where he completed his post-doctoral studies.  Among his numerous accolades, he proudly represented the United States in Spain as a Fulbright Scholar.

This event is free and open to the public. Participants need to register online and must bring their own instruments.
