What Is Data Loss Prevention?

Data Loss Prevention (DLP) tools protect Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and Payment Card Industry (PCI) data transmitted electronically. This type of data includes social security numbers, credit card/bank information, taxpayer identification numbers, and other types of information that is protected under laws such as FERPA and HIPAA.

Our goal is to keep your data safe by informing you when data is sent electronically, and identified as sensitive. It is best practice to use existing services or portals designed to support the collection of electronic information containing PII and PCI data.  It is your professional responsibility to determine whether the information should be sent electronically. Please review our existing Information Technology Policy and Data Storage Guidelines for more information.
