Assistive Technology

The Accessibility Services Center (ASC) works to leverage available technology resources to increase the accessibility of our classrooms and campus in general. This includes educating students on accessibility resources available via their Office 365 account and loaning needed software and hardware to campus constituents. Our hope is that these resources will provide the users with greater autonomy to engage fully with the incredible learning opportunities available on our campus.

Office 365 Accessibility

All Stetson faculty, staff, and students are provided with an @stetson.edu email address with an associated Office 365 account. This account grants access to a number of Microsoft products (including 5 free downloads of Microsoft Office). Microsoft is committed to the accessibility of their products and have been working diligently to create new add-ins and features including text-to-speech, live captioning, and an immersive reader. ASC staff are available to consult with student on ways to utilize these features to ensure access and support their success in the classroom.

Loaning Software and Hardware

Due to limited inventory, all available software and hardware loan options are designed for brief use. If an individual believes they would benefit from the use of any of these personal assistance devices, the ASC would recommend that the individual purchase one through the appropriate vendor for their continued personal use.

Phonak EasyPen Microphone & MyLink Receiver

The Phonak EasyPen and MyLink provide a direct audio connection between a speaker and a participant who is hard of hearing. The Phonak EasyPen microphone hangs on a lanyard around the neck of the presenter. The MyLink receiver can be automatically connected to a hearing aid via T-coil, or an available audio jack within the MyLink can be connected to headphones. This is ideal for larger presentations, campus tours, and other environments where there may be a great deal of ambient noise.

Four (4) EasyPen and MyLink kits are available for check-out at the library circulation desk with a valid Stetson ID. The kit includes the necessary equipment and some helpful how-to materials. The loan period for the kit is 24 hours. Failure to return loaned equipment or returning damaged equipment may result in fines and/or holds on the individual's account.

Livescribe Echo Smart Pen

The Livescribe Echo Smart Pen allows an individual to take handwritten notes while audio recording the presentation/lecture. The audio recording is tagged based on the individual's written words and can be quickly navigated to find the necessary information within the recording.

Introduction video to the Echo Smart Pen

The Echo Smart Pen is currently available only for students registered with the ASC for an audio recording accommodation. The ASC will provide a list of approved students to the library. Students can check out a Smart Pen for up to one month at a time. Failure to return loaned equipment or returning damaged equipment may result in fines and/or holds on the individual's account.

Glean Audio NoteTaker

Glean Audio NoteTaker is a software program designed for the user to audio record the lectures and type any personal notes next to the audio recording. Glean creates "chunks" of audio based on the speaker's natural pauses and allows the user to color code important sections of audio for later review. Glean is currently available only for students registered with the ASC for an audio recording accommodation.
