LAW READY Living and Learning Community

Are you thinking about law school or a career in law? Join Stetson’s LAW READY Living and Learning Community — a unique residential program designed to help first-year students explore the legal world from day one.

Live and Learn Together

  • Live with other pre-law students in a wing of Stetson’s beautiful new Lynn Residence Hall.
  • Your Resident Assistant (RA) will have pre-law experience and help you connect with mentors, student organizations, and professional opportunities.
  • Take courses with your cohort and receive targeted advising and mentorship.

Fall Semester: Take an exclusive First-Year Seminar with your cohort— “The Architecture of Law: Codes, Crimes, and Contracts”—taught by Dr. Joshua Rust, Stetson’s Pre-Law Director and Professor of Philosophy. This class will also include an exclusive immersive component where you will work with a local attorney to receive hands-on training in foundational estate planning.

  • This course treats law as an architecture rather than a mere set of rules: a built "second nature" shaped over time by competing purposes, constraints, and social pressures. We begin by asking what kind of structure law is—whether it functions as an instrument of power, a vehicle of moral reason, or a historically layered framework that stabilizes and revises collective life. In the second half of the course, we examine three major structural components of this legal architecture—criminal law, torts, and regulatory law—using the image of a “Law Tree” to clarify their distinct aims, tools, and limits, and to show how different legal forms support, constrain, and correct one another.

Spring Semester: your cohort will go on to take “Ethical and Legal Context of Business,” taught by a practicing attorney.

  • Explore key topics such as Constitutional Law, the History and Philosophy of Law, Business Law Fundamentals, and Feminist Legal Theory via your minor’s electives.
  • Gain insight into how law shapes society—and how you can shape the law.

Your first-year courses will introduce you to the foundations of legal thinking and help you decide whether to pursue one (or both) of Stetson’s law-focused minors: Business Law or Law, Society, and Advocacy (expected Fall 2026). Students who excel in the spring course may begin the Business Law minor early. Select a major of your choice
