Bruce R. Jacob Visiting Assistant Professor Program

Stetson University College of Law's Bruce R. Jacob Visiting Assistant Professor (VAP) Program, named in honor of Dean Emeritus Bruce R. Jacob, is designed for individuals who seek the opportunity to enter academia by gaining full-time teaching experience and developing their scholarly agenda. Applicants should have a strong academic record and demonstrated commitment to outstanding teaching and scholarship.

Jacob VAPs normally serve two years, but may, in exceptional circumstances, be extended for a third. Each VAP teaches one course in his or her first semester, then two courses in the second semester. Additionally, each VAP is eligible to apply for a research grant payable during the summer between the first and second years, and is expected to produce at least one significant piece of scholarship.

The College of Law provides the Jacob VAPs with considerable assistance and guidance in developing their academic careers. Among other things, they are mentored by experienced members of the tenured faculty and receive several benefits of full-time professors, such as research assistants and a budget for professional travel. VAPs have opportunities to become fully integrated into the life of the College of Law, and have taught classes across the law school curriculum, in addition to developing their own courses. The College of Law has placed 100% of its VAPs into tenure-track positions, and they are now teaching at such places as DePaul University College of Law, Drake University Law School, University of Kentucky College of Law, Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law, Southwestern Law School, and University of Tennessee College of Law.
