About The Program
Students work under the direct supervision of intellectual property attorneys and agents at the site location. Students gain experience in researching various types of intellectual property issues and drafting different types of documents related to applications for protection, licensing, assignment, and other matters involving procurement or transfer as well as litigation.
Students may also engage in drafting opinion letters and submitting different types of applications to governmental bodies responsible for IP regulation and administration on regional, national, and international levels. The externship focuses on patent law; however, some exposure to trademark issues is included. There is a strong emphasis on technical and scientific matters in this Externship and undergraduate training in those disciplines is preferred.
