Biography
Previously a partner at Holland & Knight LLP, Professor Anthony J. Palermo focuses his teaching and scholarship on business and commercial law.
Previously, Professor Palermo was a Teaching Fellow in Harvard College’s Government Department for the course Justice with Professor Michael Sandel and in Harvard College’s Molecular and Cellular Biology Department for the course Bioethics with Professors Michael Sandel and Douglas Melton. In recognition of his work, he was awarded the Harvard University Certificate of Distinction in Teaching.
Professor Palermo is a frequent speaker and has given guest lectures and taught continuing legal education (CLE) courses for various government agencies, universities, companies, and bar organizations on topics related to business litigation, commercial law, cybersecurity, and privacy. He has also authored articles for multiple legal publications in these areas. His articles have appeared or are forthcoming in the Florida Law Review, the Florida Law Review Forum, and the Florida Bar Journal. His published works have been cited by state and federal trial and appellate courts.
Palermo is a Certified Information Privacy Professional/United States (CIPP/US) with the International Association of Privacy Professionals (the IAPP). Additionally, he has held and continues to serve in various positions of local, state, and national bar leadership.
During his nearly 11 years at a preeminent AmLaw top-25, international law firm, he litigated in state and federal courts across the country, including at the trial and appellate level, and advised on regulatory and corporate compliance issues. He defended against putative class actions in various jurisdictions and also represented multiple professional sports teams, including Major League Baseball and National Hockey League franchises. While in practice, the State of Michigan appointed him to serve as a Special Assistant Attorney General in order to advise the Michigan State Housing Development Authority on compliance with consumer protection and lending laws.
As a practicing attorney, he was selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America guide for Commercial Litigation and recognized as a “Florida Super Lawyer” by Super Lawyers magazine, as a “Florida Legal Elite” attorney by Florida Trend magazine, and as a “Top Lawyer” for banking and finance litigation by Tampa Magazine. In addition, he was previously recognized nationally as one of only five consumer protection attorneys to be honored as a Law360 Rising Star and named to its list of top attorneys “whose legal accomplishments transcend their age.”
At Stetson, Professor Palermo teaches Contracts, Sales and Leases, Commercial Transactions, and Law and Justice, an upper-level seminar that explores modern legal issues through various theories of justice developed by classical and contemporary political philosophers. He also serves as a faculty advisor to the Business Law Concentration, the Hispanic National Bar Association, and the Business Law Society.
Professor Palermo graduated from the Undergraduate Honors Program, was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, and earned his B.A. in Political Science with highest distinction, with a minor in Philosophy, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School.
