BARTHOLOMEW'S VISIT WILL TESTIFY THAT UKRAINE IS P.Ts.U. TERRITORY AND MOSCOW PATRIARCHATE IS HERE AS GUEST—
RELIGIOUS STUDIES SCHOLAR
The visit by Patriarch Bartholomew is the recognition on the inter-church diplomatic level that Ukraine is the territory of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (PTsU). This is the opinion expressed by religious studies scholar Dmitry Gorevoy in an article for Radio Liberty.
"When the pope or the patriarch comes to Ukraine, this testifies that Ukraine is a multi-confessional country, and not the fiefdom of the Moscow patriarchate. This destroys the myth about the canonical territory of the Russian Orthodox Church (RPTs). Because it shows that there are both Greek Catholics and Catholics. This also must be taken into account.
"And in the case of the PTsU, it turns out in general that Bartholomew is coming at the invitation of the head of an autocephalous church. On the inter-church diplomatic level, this is a recognition that Ukraine is the territory of the PTsU.
"Consequently the Moscow patriarchate is here
as a
guest. They are no longer the lords but only second-degree
Orthodox bishops who
are not even honored as first-rank Orthodox bishops. This is a
great insult for
them. All the time they have been living self-assured in their
status, and
suddenly everything is turned upside down. And those who yesterday
were not
recognized have become recognized and the 'canonical' have become
uncanonical," Dmitry Gorevoy noted. (tr. by PDS, posted 7 July
