Bette Heins, Ph.D., professor of education, was featured as a guest in a BYU radio interview episode, “Melania as First Lady, Single-Gender Schools, Natural Disasters,” where she showcased experience in single-gender school systems and its implications, posted by BYU Radio Nov. 14.

Christopher Ferguson, Ph.D., chair of the psychology department, was quoted in the article, “Spanking on the Decline? Fewer Parents Admit to It,” noting the possibility that parents may exhibit survey bias, reporting that they do not spank their kids out of embarrassment when they do, posted by Yahoo News Nov. 17.

The DeLand Christmas Parade will begin Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m., lining up near the Stetson University campus and moving south on Woodland Boulevard through downtown DeLand. After 67 years of the DeLand Jaycees hosting the annual Christmas parade, three DeLand Rotary clubs, comprising more than 200 volunteers, have agreed to host it after the Jaycees said they could not, posted by U.S. Official News, Nov. 17.

Former Provost and Executive Vice President Beth Paul, Ph.D., was featured in the article, “Capital’s new president Elizabeth Paul is hands-on,” where her work as Capital University’s new president is attributed to her in-depth and caring interactions with students and university employees, posted by The Columbus Dispatch Dec. 2.

The Nov. 28 U.S. News & World Report quotes Law Professor Charles Rose and Trial Team member student Colby Connell in the article, “Master Trial Advocacy Skills During Law School.” Professor Rose spoke with the Tampa Bay Times for the story, “Cleared, but still burdened after split-second decision to fire fatal road-rage shot.” The Brandon News & Tribune also ran the Times article.

Professor Ciara Torres-Spelliscy was last week’s NPR’s Source of the Week.

Professor Louis Virelli spoke with 10News for the story, “Trump’s flag-burning tweet ignites controversy.”

Ma, Ph.D., professor of finance and director of Stetson’s Roland George Investments Institute, was quoted in the article, “The 10 Most Anticipated IPOs of 2017” noting that, although Uber is forecasted to be a largely valued initial public offering, the company needs to control its losses, posted by Yahoo News and several other outlets Nov. 21.

K.C. Ma, Ph.D., professor of finance and director of Stetson’s Roland George Investments Institute, was quoted in the article, “5 Reasons Facebook Inc. (FB) Stock Is a Phenomenal Long-Term Buy,” noting that the founder of Facebook believes that all social interaction will be in virtual reality, intimating that the company has long-term value, posted by U.S News & World Report and several other outlets Nov. 24.

Petros Xanthopoulos, Ph.D., assistant professor for the decision and information sciences department, wrote the article, “Abusing Statistics: A Problem of Significance,” where he pointed out that the misuse of statistics during the 2016 presidential election should not reflect statistics as a profession itself. The Nov. 23 Southeast Texas Record reports that Texas Tech School of Law Dean and Professor Darby Dickerson has accepted a position as the new dean of the John Marshall School of Law in Chicago starting Jan. 1, 2017.

The Nov. 25 Tampa Bay Times and Nov. 26 Santa Monica Daily Press ran the news of Stetson’s win in the National Civil Trial Competition. A national wire release in 24/7 distributed the news of the national victory to additional multiple media outlets.

Alumni News:

State Sen. Joe Negron was elected president of the Florida Senate. After graduating Stetson with a bachelor’s in political science, Negron earned his law degree from Emory University and received a Master of Public Administration at Harvard University. His history in the Senate has been focused heavily on critical water issues within his Treasure Coast district, and on personal liberties, posted by WUSF Public Media, Nov. 19.

Jeff Vail, Chief Operating Officer for business consultancy at WGroup, a technology management consulting firm, with a bachelor’s in business administration from Stetson University, was featured in a webcast hosted by Pneuron “Webcast to Explore Ways to Solve Complex Legacy, Data Integration Issues,” posted by Financial Buzz Nov. 21.

Vivien Monaco was named “2016 Associate of the Year” by the Greater Orlando Builders Association. Earning at M.B.A and J.D, her work at the Burr and Forman law firm focuses on serving public and private real estate clients with areas in environmental and government issues as a member of the firm’s Real Estate Practice Group, posted by Burr Firm News Nov. 21.

Robert Harris was elected the chairman of the Council of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Graduating Stetson with his B.B.A. in Accounting, Harris will lead the world’s largest body of certified public accountants, published by Utlitzer Nov. 29.

Law alumnus Jay Wolfson was quoted in the Nov. 25 New York Times regarding Obamacare, and in BBC , Newsday Radio and Nonprofit Quarterly.

Law alumnus Peter France has died, according to the Pensacola News Journal. He was a founding student at Eckerd College, his undergraduate institution, at age 16.

Law alumna Stacey-Ann Saint-Hubert has joined the Kelley Kronenberg Tampa Office, according to the Nov. 29 Tampa Bay Newswire.

The November Virgin Islands Consortium and St. Thomas Source reports that Law alumna Genevieve Whitaker has been selected for a U.S. Human Rights Fellowship.

According to the Nov. 22 Targeted News Service, Law grad Abby M. Freedman has been selected as chair of the School Board of Broward County, Florida.
