On Tuesday, Sept. 11, as part of the national 911day.org movement, Stetson University will host a “Day of Action” of service and programs in remembrance of the events of 9/11. The public is invited to attend.

“The attacks on 9/11 were a tragedy, but they reignited a sense of service and civic duty in our country,” said Heather Hamilton, a Stetson staff member who is coordinating the “Day of Action” programs. “We believe that taking this day to reflect on our values and then take action on their behalf is an important part of our commitment to our community and country.”

At 8 a.m., community members will gather at the campus flag located in front of Elizabeth Hall,421 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand, where members of the university’s ROTC program will lead a ceremony to lower the flag to half-staff in remembrance of the victims of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Stetson President Wendy Libby will give brief remarks.

At noon, select faculty, staff and students will be panelists for a forum to discuss the effects of 9/11 on our society and community. The discussion will be held in the Stetson Room of the Carlton Union Building, 421 N. Woodland Blvd.

From 4 to 5:30 p.m., Stetson volunteers will be doing beautification work at the DeLand Easter Seals Center.

At 6 p.m., community members will again gather at the campus flag for a closing ceremony at which the flag will be raised back to full staff in recognition of our country’s resilience after 9/11. Stetson student Brian Emery, whose father passed away during the attacks, will give brief remarks.

Throughout the day, the Center for Community Engagement will be collecting donations of clothing, accessories, shoes, household items, office supplies and books for AMVETS, as well as financial contributions for the Community Foundation of East Central Florida’s “Feed Our Neighbors” endowment campaign (http://cfecf.org/feed-our-neighbors).
