BURIAL SERVICE FOR MONASTICS WHO PERISHED FROM SHELLING HELD IN SVIATOGORSK LAVRA
Union of Orthodox Journalists, 3 June 2022
On 3 June 2022, in the Dormition cathedral of the Sviatogorsk lavra, Metropolitan of Sviatogorsk Arseny conducted the service of the burial of monastics who perished during shelling of the cloister. This was reported by the press service of the Donetsk diocese on its Facebook page.
The monks and parishioners of the cloister conducted on their final journey the dean of the lavra, Arkhimandrite Galaktion; the monk Aristoklij; and the nun Barbara.
According to the report, on 1 June, due to unceasing shelling, it was impossible to conduct the burial of the deceased. The liturgies for the feast day of the Ascension of the Lord were held in the basements of the cloister.
On 2 June the prepared bodies of the deceased monastics were moved into the Dormition cathedral, where in accordance with the church rules the Gospel and Apostle were read over them.
On 3 June, the slain residents of the cloister were commemorated and buried behind the altar of the Dormition cathedral. The blasts did not let up during the time of the funeral service.
Earlier, the Union of Orthodox Journalists reported that yet another monk of the Sviatogorsk lavra, who was wounded during the shelling of the cloister, passed away to the Lord in the hospital. (tr. by PDS, posted 6 June 2022)
WOODEN HERMITAGE OF SVIATOGORSK LAVRA SET
ABLAZE BY ROUTINE
SHELLING BY INVADERS It was learned on 4 June that the
Sviatogorsk lavra in
Donetsk oblast came under fire from the invaders again. The UPTsMP confirmed the fact of a
Russian attack on the
hermitage of All-Saints: "As the result of military actions,
a large-scale
fire broke out on the territory of the All-Saints hermitage
of the Holy
Dormition Sviatogorsk lavra. Flames completely engulfed the
main church of the
cloister." At the present, there is no information
about dead and wounded. The All-Saints hermitage [skete] was
built in 1912. The number of dead as the result of
shelling of the
Sviatogorwsk lavra, which occurred several days ago, grew to
four persons.
Three monastics died at the time of shelling, and five were
seriously wounded.
One of them died on 3 June in the hospital. "The cynical shelling of the monastery,
in which,
besides the monastic brothers and sisters, there are around
300 refugees, among
whom are disabled, elderly, around 60 children, including
infants, is beyond
reason and comprehension of what kind of enemies these
civilians can be, who
took refuge from war within the walls of an ancient national
shrine of the
Slobozhansk territory, the Sviatogorsk Dormition lavra," the
statement
from the Donetsk diocese of the UPTs says. Just who shelled the lavra, the Moscow
patriarchate does not
state. As is known, the Rashists [Russian
fascists] began shelling
the Sviatogorsk lavra, which is under the jurisdiction of
the UPTsMP, back in
March. In early May, the hermitage of the
Sviatogorsk lavra was
destroyed by enemy artillery. On 30 May 2022, as the result of shelling
by the Russians of
the city of Sviatogorsk, the Holy Dormition Sviatogorsk
lavra was destroyed,
two monks and a nun of this cloister perished, and three
monks were injured. On 3 June, the monastics who perished as
the result of
artillery shelling were buried in the Sviatogorsk lavra.
