Top News:

• Stetson University was mentioned July 15 in the Daytona Beach News-Journal article, “With federal funds in sight, Volusia County Council reconsiders SunRail to DeLand.” Because the SunRail station would be located 3.5 miles west of downtown DeLand, it would require the additional step of adding a bus or trolley to shuttle passengers back and forth from downtown and Stetson University, according to the story, which also appeared on MassTransitMag.com.

Asal Johnson, PhD

• Asal Mohamadi Johnson, PhD, assistant professor of Public Health, was quoted July 16 by Reuters and other media outlets for an article, “When Hurricanes Halt Treatment, Lung Cancer Patients Die Sooner.” Johnson, who was not involved in the study, stated, “The impacts of climate change and related extreme weather events extend to cancer patients with possible serious consequences. It is important for cancer treatment facilities to have a system in place during hurricane seasons and communicate to patients what could be done if the facility is forced to close down.”

• Danielle Lindner, PhD, assistant professor of Psychology; Chris Ferguson, PhD, professor of Psychology; and Stetson alumna Melissa Trible were mentioned July 12 in the Nerd Reactor article, “Research Finds Video Game Sexualization Doesn’t Increase Female Gamers’ Body Dissatisfaction.” A study by the team found a lack of correlation between portrayals of sexualized women in video games and the way female gamers view themselves.

• Chris Ferguson, professor of Psychology, authored the article, “Bad Data Analysis and Psychology’s Replication Crisis,” on July 15 in Quillette. This article looks at the conflicting results of studies of video games and potential causes of these results. Ferguson also explores the nature of the replication crisis where “previously held truisms are proving to be false.”

• Law Professor Peter F. Lake is quoted in the July 18 Inside Higher Ed article, “Tough New Law Against Hazing.”

• Law Professor Peter F. Lake is quoted in the July 16 Anchorage Daily News article, “University of Alaska governing board delays vote on whether to declare financial emergency.”

• Law Professor Ciara Torres-Spelliscy wrote the July 11 Brennan Center for Justice piece, “How a Congressman’s Extramarital Affairs Could Undermine Campaign Spending Rules.” The article was mentioned in a July 11 Election Law Blog post.

• Stetson alumnus Logan Gilbert was featured on July 15 in The Seattle Times article, “Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto on Logan Gilbert and Raleigh’s promotion to Class AA: We’re Pumped.” This article talks about Gilbert being promoted from low A status to AA status.

• Stetson alumna Lorna Jean Hagstrom authored an article on July 15 in the West Volusia Beacon, “Reflections on West Volusia’s Past: DeLand was a Different Place without AC.” The article mentions her time in Chaudoin and Elizabeth Halls in the late 1950s before air-conditioning.

• Law Professor Rebecca C. • Law Professor Peter F. Lake is quoted in the July 17 Diverse article, “Higher Ed Faces Affirmative Action, Other Equity and Diversity Issues in Courts.”

Alumni News:

• Alumna Katherine C. Russo co-wrote an article July 16 for Police and Security News titled, “How Law Enforcement is Using Genealogy Testing Services to Solve Cold Cases.

• Law alumnus Jeffrey Hendriks was appointed as a judge in St. Lucie County, Florida, as reported on July 12 by TCPalm. Hendriks, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, has been a prosecutor for the 19th Circuit State Attorney’s Office since 2016 (FLAPOL).

• Law alumnus Kasey Feltner was appointed to the Stetson College of Law Veterans Law Institute Advisory Board, as reported on July 16. During his time at Stetson, Feltner participated in the Veteran Law Institute’s Clinic and “represented multiple veterans in their appeals to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Board of Veterans Appeals.”

• Law alumna Beth A. Houghton was appointed as CEO of the Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County, as reported on July 15 in Tampa Bay Newspapers.
