Coach Bria Wins Her 200th as Hatters Down Liberty

Sarah Sagerer led four Hatters in double figures with 20 points as Stetson won its ASUN opener 69-52 over visiting Liberty University on Tuesday night at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (6-9, 1-0 ASUN) held the Flames (4-11, 0-2) to just 19 first half points and to 29.5 percent shooting on the night.

Head Coach Lynn Bria, who earned her 200th victory with the Hatters, praised the team’s defensive effort.

“I thought defensively we played really well. I thought we were active (and) got a ton of deflections. In the second half, we did a much better job on the defensive glass.  I was really, really proud of our effort. It was probably our best defensive game we have played all year,” she said.

Stetson turned on the offense in the second and third quarters, outscoring Liberty 39-21 during those two frames.  A 12-2 run near the end of the first half gave Stetson a 31-19 edge at the break.

Overall, Sagerer was 7-for-14 from the floor while collecting eight rebounds and two blocks.  McKenna Beach scored 14 points, while Megan Vincent added 11 and Jon’Nita Henry scored 10.

Stetson hit nine 3-pointers in the game, including two each by Beach, Henry and Addi Walters.  The Hatters also drew three charges and blocked five shots as a team.

“It feels amazing (to be 1-0 in conference), especially with the start that we had,” sophomore Kendall Lentz said.  “We are trying to focus on this being a new season and getting wins.”

Stetson will play its next three games on the road, beginning Saturday afternoon, Jan. 12, at Lipscomb.
