Stetson University sophomore libero Chelcie Spence has been named the ASUN Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday, Aug. 27.

Spence averaged 4.83 digs-per-set to help lead Stetson to a perfect 3-0 weekend at the FIU Kickoff in Miami. She picked up 22 digs in the Hatters’ 3-1 win over Tennessee State on Friday, Aug. 24, adding three service aces as well.

On Saturday, Aug. 25, she recorded 13 digs in Stetson’s 3-0 win over Florida A&M, then collected 23 digs in the Hatters’ 3-2 come-from-behind victory over FIU.  Twelve of her digs came in the final three sets as the Hatters rallied from an 0-2 deficit to sweep the weekend.

It is Spence’s first career Defensive Player of the Week award, and the first by a Hatter since middle blocker Ellen Hawks was honored in 2013.

The Stetson team is off to a strong start this season with four wins, including a 3-1 victory over Middle Tennessee on Saturday evening, Sept. 1, in the final match of the MTSU Blue Raider Bash.
