Gilbert, Wilson Add More All-America Honors

Stetson University’s Logan Gilbert and Brooks Wilson continue to rake in the honors for their outstanding 2018 seasons for the Hatters.

Brooks Wilson

Last week, both were named to All-America teams by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), D1Baseball.com and Perfect Game. Both also were named to the Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America All-America teams last week.

And Wilson nabbed the 2018 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, presented by the College Baseball Foundation.

The announcements started early on Wednesday, June 13, when Perfect Game announced its 2018 All-America teams. Wilson, who was also named the ASUN Player of the Year and was the Most Outstanding Player in the DeLand Regional, was selected as a Utility player.

The senior from Lakeland finished his final season for the Hatters hitting .299 with a team-high 16 doubles 35 walks. He posted a .455 slugging percentage to go with a team-leading .413 on-base percentage. On the mound, Wilson finished the year with a 6-0 record in 32 relief appearances and tied for the NCAA lead with 20 saves while posting a 2.08 ERA in 56.1 innings of work with 69 strikeouts.

Wilson finished his career with 310 strikeouts, good for fifth on the Hatters’ career list. His 20 saves are sixth in Stetson history and his 24 wins are tied for eighth.

Wilson was joined on the Perfect Game All-America team by Gilbert, who was also named the ASUN Pitcher of the Year for a second straight season this year. The junior finished the season with an 11-2 record with a 2.72 ERA. Gilbert posted a program-record, and NCAA best, 163 strikeouts in 112.1 innings of work on the year.

After noon on Wednesday came announcements from the NCBWA and D1Baseball.com of their All-America teams.

Like Perfect Game, Wilson was named to the NCBWA first team as a Utility player while Gilbert was a first team selection as a starting pitcher. Junior Joey Gonzalez was also recognized as a third team selection by the NCBWA as a starting pitcher after posting an 8-3 record with a team best 2.07 ERA in 78.1 innings of work.

D1Baseball.com was the final group to drop its All-America squads with Wilson and Gilbert both earning first team honors – Wilson as a Utility player and Gilbert as a starting pitcher.

In addition to the All-America honors, the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) announced its All-Region teams on Wednesday. Wilson was selected as a first team All-Region player as a relief pitcher. Gilbert was a second team All-South region pick.

The ABCA will announce its Rawlings Gold Glove team this Wednesday, June 20. Pitcher of the Year (June 25) and Player of the Year (June 27) will be announced next week.

Gilbert, who was selected in the first round of the MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners, is expected to forego his senior season with the Hatters and sign to play professionally. Wilson was a seventh-round selection of the Atlanta Braves and is planning to begin his professional career with Danville (Va.) Braves in the Appalachian League when that team opens its 68-game season on Tuesday.
