Hatters Take ASUN Crown Behind Senger Shutout of UNF

Team celebrates in a huddle on the field.

Jacksonville, Fla. – Stetson coach Steve Trimper said he could tell during the bus ride from the hotel to North Florida’s Harmon Stadium on Saturday morning that his team was focused and ready to go.

A five-run outburst in the first inning of the ASUN Championship game gave sophomore left-hander Mitchell Senger all the support he needed in blanking the Ospreys 6-0 for the eighth ASUN Tournament Championship in Stetson program history.

For Stetson (45-11) it is the first time the Hatters have ever captured both the regular season and tournament titles in the same year. The win runs the Stetson win streak to 15 games, which is the longest active streak in Division I, and leaves the Hatters time to wait and see what the NCAA selection committee has in store for them.

Senger (8-2) was dominant almost from the start. He allowed a walk in the first inning and then an infield single and a walk in the second inning before Hatters pitching coach Dave Therneau went to the mound for a conversation, resulting in a slight adjustment in Senger’s delivery.

The left-hander retired the next 13 Ospreys in a row, gave up an infield hit before getting a double play, and then retired the next six. UNF (28-28) opened the ninth with a hit and then Senger delivered a wild pitch. Another visit from Therneau gave Senger a chance to catch his breath. He retired the next three UNF hitters, closing with his sixth strikeout to clinch the win.

It was Senger’s fourth complete game of the season and his third shutout, allowing the Hatters to tie for the NCAA lead in that category while also tying the program record.

The Hatters gave UNF starter Cooper Bradford (4-3) no chance to make any adjustments. Andrew MacNeil opened the game by beating out an infield single and Mike Spooner followed with a double to the wall in right center to give the Hatters a 1-0 lead.

After Jacob Koos was hit by a pitch and Brooks Wilson fouled out, Eric Foggo delivered a single to right, plating Spooner and Koos for a 3-0 lead. Jorge Arenas kept the inning going with a double off the glove of UNF shortstop Abraham Sequera before Austin Hale delivered a two-run double for a 5-0 lead, chasing Bradford from the mound.

Stetson added an unearned run in the second on a single by Wilson off reliever Eddie Miller, scoring Koos, who had singled and moved up to third on a throwing error on a failed pick-off attempt.

From there it was all about pitching and defense as the Hatters managed just two more hits in the game.

Spooner and Wilson had two hits each in the game for Stetson while UNF managed just three hits total off Senger.

Foggo was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after hitting .400 in the four games with four RBI. He was joined on the All-Tournament team by Senger, Spooner, Koos and Logan Gilbert.

The Hatters will turn out on Monday at 11 a.m. at Persimmon Hollow for the NCAA Selection Show Watch Party. The public is invited to attend the event. Fans are also encouraged to order tickets now for the NCAA Regional Tournament, which will be played June 1-3.

Sites for the Regionals will be announced on Sunday evening.
