  • Philanthropy News Digest reported “Stetson University Receives $18 Million for New Science Building” on April 13. Stetson Trustees Cici and Hyatt Brown recently donated the money for the new building on the DeLand campus. Florida Trend online also reported “Stetson University receives $18 million gift, largest in school’s history,” and linked to a full story in The Orlando Sentinel.
  • Stetson professor of psychology, Chris Ferguson, Ph.D., wrote an Opinion piece for the New York Daily News on April 17, “Many reasons why we shouldn’t worry that ’13 Reasons Why’ is leading teens to suicide.” Ferguson wrote, “it’s advisable that suicide-prevention advocates exercise greater caution when linking fictional media to suicide contagion. The data don’t support the claims of harm.”
  • Law Professor Ciara Torres-Spelliscy is quoted in the April 17 NBC News article, “Trump campaign paid Trump bodyguard Keith Schiller’s lawyers, records show.” The news also ran in MSN News.
  • An autopsy has revealed former Stetson football player Nick Blakely died of enlarged heart, according to a story in The Daytona Beach News-Journal on April 19. Blakely collapsed after a practice last August and was pronounced dead at Florida Hospital DeLand.
  • The parents of Stetson football player Nick Blakely have filed a wrongful death suit against the university, The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported April 18.
  • Former Stetson assistant cross country coach Brian Sharbono was the highest finishing local runner in the Boston Marathon, posting a time of 2 hours, 48 minutes, 22 seconds, according to a story in The Daytona Beach News-Journal on April 17. The story, “Locals Brave Brutal Marathon,” also said ex-Stetson head cross country coach, Joe Matuszczak, finished with a time of 2:57:32. The highest finishing local female was former Stetson soccer player and cross country runner, Laurie Scott ’17, who finished in 3:18:37.
  • K.C. Ma, Ph.D., Roland George Chair of Applied Investments at Stetson, was quoted in the U.S. News and World Report on April 16 about the hurtles that electric vehicles are still facing in terms of investments.  One hurdle is that the global electric vehicle market rose only by 1 percent based on the number of cars sold in the past five years, he said.
  • Law Professor Luz Nagle is quoted in the April14 Global News Radio story, “What Accused Police Officers Are in Store for in Cuba.”
  • Law Professor Ellen Podgor is quoted in the April 17 Washington Post article, “Stormy Daniels’s lawyer could be playing mind games with Michael Cohen.” The news also ran in The Fix.

    WMFE 90.7 Public Radio in Orlando featured, “Spotlight: Stetson Students Finalizing One Act Plays” on April 13. Student director Cori LaPinsky talked about Poof!, a play by Lynn Nottage, in which the main character’s abusive husband spontaneously disappears. “The play opens and you hear him yelling, and then all of a sudden she screams at him and he just combusts into thin air. So, it has a comedic element to it … but there are still some moments in it where it’s very directed towards abuse,” LaPinsky said.

  • The Gulfport Gabber includes news of a proposed ban on plastic straws in area restaurants brought by Stetson Law student Jenn Winn before Gulfport City Council as part of her environmental advocacy class with Professor Lance Long.
  • A previous Stetson faculty member, Ronald Brownie, was recently named secretary of the board of directors for the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP).
  • Andy Dehnart, visiting assistant professor of journalism, was set to discuss the infiltration of fake advertising in social media during a free program Thursday, April 19, at the New Smyrna Beach Regional Library, according to The Daytona Beach News-Journal.
  • Stetson University was recently mentioned in a story, “25 Best Small Towns in Florida,” which included the city of DeLand, in VacationIdea, Dream Vacation magazine.
  • Stetson alumna Britt McHenry was inducted into the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame, according to Space Coast Daily.com. She joined ESPN in 2014 and has appeared on various shows including Sports Center, Outside the Lines, NFL Live and Baseball Tonight.
  • Stetson University’s Earth Day Beach Cleanup on April 14 was mentioned in The Daytona Beach News-Journal story, “April offers bevy of nature festivals in Volusia, Flagler,” on April 13.
  • Law Professor Peter Lake is quoted in the April 17 Boston Globe article, “Mount Ida Students’ Records Shared Without Their Permission.

  • The April 17 Good News Pilipinas ran news of the winner of Stetson’s annual IEMCC.

  • The Highlands News-Sun reports “Local IB students continue to perform above national averages,” including one International Baccalaureate student Tanner Tuck, a graduating senior from the Highlands County School District who “plans to major in entrepreneurship at Stetson University and then attend law school.”

Alumni News:

  • Stetson Alumni, John Renick, is on a new mission later in his life to become an ordained minister. At the end of this month he will be considered to for approval by a candidacy committee for ordination, according to the Greenfield Reporter.
  • Eric Cinnamond, who graduated from Stetson with a B.B.A. in Finance was interviewed recently by the Valuewalk about investment and financial advice as well as opinion.
  • Garret Mary Bowyer, a Stetson alumni, passed away on April 10 at age 83 in Greenville, South Carolina.
  • Stetson alumna Danielle Cinicolo, CPA and Assistant Director of Tax and Accounting Services at Keyes, Stange & Wooten CPA Firm, has become an equity member of KSW and Keyes, Stange & Wooten Wealth Management, according to Plus Company Updates.
