Lepinay leads Hatter Tennis past Bethune-Cookman, 4-3

Stetson’s Eveline Lepinay won a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles to give the Hatters a 4-3 win over Bethune-Cookman, Wednesday at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

Lepinay, a senior, dropped the first set, 7-6, to Bethune’s Mina Matsuba. But Lepinay roared back to take the second set by a 6-0 count, and then dominated her opponent to win the third set, 6-1.

The Hatters (3-3) opened the day by dropping the doubles point. The Wildcats (1-5) won matches at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.

Stetson was dominant early in singles play. Arijana Korac evened the team match at 1-1 after breezing her way to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3.

Isabella Fernandez, playing in her first match of the spring, gave the Hatters a 2-1 lead with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4.

Carolina Meregalli put the Hatters in front, 3-1, with her 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5. But the Hatters dropped matches at No. 2 and No. 6, setting the stage for Lepinay’s heroics.

The Hatters next face Georgia Southern, 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 1 in Statesboro, Ga.
