Environmental Science and Studies

Luma is a member of the Environmental Club, Hatter Harvest and the women’s lacrosse team, and she is also a Gillespie Museum Guide.

In addition to excelling in her courses, Luma completed a senior research project, which she presented at Stetson Showcase, on the effectiveness of DeLand farmers’ markets based on shoppers’ motives. For that work, she interviewed attendees at DeLand's two main farmers’ markets (Artisan Alley and the Wednesday fairgrounds market) to investigate their motives as shoppers and compare and contrast those motives to the markets' stated goals of providing food and fresh produce. She effectively used multiple research methods and developed a real rapport with staff at both markets. She has also continued her involvement at the Artisan Alley market since concluding her data collection by staffing the SNAP tent every Friday.

Luma will take a gap year before applying to law schools and working for Riverside Conservancy in Edgewater, FL writing grants and planting living shorelines.
