Biography

Dr. Brock has training and formal degrees in Nutrition, Exercise Science, and Exercise Physiology largely in the context of clinical trials, chronic disease prevention, and public health. Additionally, he completed a 2-year National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease and Obesity jointly in the Schools of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Following this training, he served the University of Vermont for 10 years, including as a tenured professor in the Exercise and Movement Science Program and Graduate College, Acting Program Director of Exercise and Movement Science, founder and author of the graduate program in Physical Activity and Wellness Science, and Founding Director of the Physical Activity and Wellness Research, Didactic, and Community Engagement Center. David served the State of Vermont as a consultant to the Legislature in areas related to obesity, physical activity , and sugar-sweetened beverage tax policies, and he received a 2-year gubernatorial appointment to Peter Shumlin's (D) statewide Council for Physical Activity and Sports.

David's overarching academic and research interests primarily focus on novel ways to increase physical activity participation, healthy dietary awareness and practices, and cognitive and behavioral strategies to improve mental and physical health. He trained and published with some of the most influential and respected scientists in the world and include the past presidents of the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, and the Obesity Society. He received regional, state, and federal monies for research, and he has contributed greater than 100 peer-reviewed published abstracts and manuscripts. He was a co-recipient of the 2014 Scientific Paper of the Year Award from the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, and the 2009 American Dietetic Association's Margaret Dullea Simko Award for Clinical Excellence. He has reviewed grants for the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, and he is currently serving o n the Editorial Board for the International Journal of Obesity.

David completed 4-years of active duty military service in the United States Coast Guard at two Search and Rescue Stations on the Outer Banks of North Carolina as part of the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" Cape Hatteras Group. Primary mission: prevent loss of life and environmental protection.
