Resources for Students
Quit Smoking Now
Quit Smoking Now is our current cessation option for students to attend in support of quitting smoking. The class meets once a week for six weeks in a group dynamic, helping participants through the quit smoking process using tools such as participant workbooks, nicotine replacement therapy and reflection techniques of past and life experiences that have triggered the smoking behavior.
For cessation information, times and locations for classes, please contact Terrance Harris, assistant director of wellness and recreation, at 386-822-7033 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Flyers will be posted on campus close to the next time the class will be available for both students and faculty/staff.
Northeast Florida AHEC
Stetson University's program is sponsored by Northeast Florida AHEC, which has cessation programs all over the State of Florida. AHEC works to promote better health at a community level by sponsoring cessation programs and educating health care professionals about ways that they can help their patients to become tobacco free. AHEC provides the university with funding for tobacco cessation programs, community education about the dangers of second-hand smoke and the transition to a tobacco-free campus; the funding also provides salaries for a graduate assistant and several Tobacco Peer Educators whose task is to organize the programs and work on tobacco initiative projects.
Clean Air is a group for students who want Stetson University to become a tobacco-free campus and educate others about the dangers of second-hand smoke. The group's goals can be summarized with the following acronym:
- Learn about the current tobacco policy.
- Understand the issues.
- No one is unaffected by second-hand smoke.
- Gather support for these issues.
- Smoke-free campus is the goal.
Great American Smokeout
The Great American Smokeout is an annual event that provides:
- Quit Assist materials
- Sticker Campaign: Pledge to be a "non-smoker in progress," "adopt a smoker" or support being "smoke-free."
- Sign a pledge form not to smoke for the day, or if you're a social smoker, not to smoke for the month.
- Adopt a smoker friend in support, do something nice for that friend and support them by wearing your support sticker.
