The Student Media and Publications Board has elected Ruby Rosenthal the editor-in-chief of Hatter Network for a third consecutive year

Hatter Network is Stetson’s student media, and it produces journalism and art via a feature magazine, The Reporter; an annual literary journal, Touchstone; an Internet radio station, WHAT Radio; and a weekly open mic event, Uncouth.

Ruby Rosenthal, a rising senior, an International Studies major with two minors, Creative Writing and Political Science, has served as editor-in-chief of Hatter Network since the fall of 2019.

Rosenthal said, “I feel incredibly honored and humbled, but mostly excited to take on the role again. We’ve made great strides in the past two years and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next year!”

“The transformation that Hatter Network has undergone over the past few years has happened because of Ruby’s vision, tenacity and ambition. The tremendous team she’s assembled has grown and evolved student media’s output even in the middle of a pandemic, which makes their creativity and journalism even more impressive,” said Andy Dehnart, faculty adviser to student media and coordinator of Stetson’s Journalism program.

Crystal Baroni, the coordinator for student media, said, “I am so very proud of Ruby! I have had the opportunity to watch her settle into her leadership position in Hatter Network over the last few years. She has had so many creative and forward-thinking ideas and it has been an absolute pleasure to see her vision come to life.  She never stops thinking about how to improve student media as a whole at Stetson and she truly is one of a kind.”

The Student Media and Publications Board — which is composed of students, faculty and staff — governs student media at Stetson, which has been recognized with national and regional awards during its 134 years.

The Board’s work includes hiring the editor-in-chief, who is charged with “assuming control and responsibility for the production, content, and finances of all of student media,” according to the Student Media and Publications Board Constitution.

Rosenthal’s duties include “training and supporting members of the editorial board and their staffs; managing and monitoring student media’s budget; managing, maintaining, and, when appropriate, enhancing student media’s resources, both physical (e.g. office space, archives) and virtual (e.g. software, email accounts); maintaining professional standards of journalistic and media excellence; and maintaining Board policies.”
