In Remembrance of Sydney Hodkinson, DMA, former Professor of Music

Sydney Hodkinson, DMA, former Almand Chair in Music Composition at Stetson, passed away peacefully in his sleep Jan. 10, a week before his 87th birthday.

He received his BM and MM degrees from the Eastman School of Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the University of Michigan. His distinguished 60-year teaching career included posts at the University of Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Southern Methodist, Oberlin, Duke, Western Ontario, Stetson, and the Aspen Music Festival and School.

“It is my hope to inculcate into the students at Stetson the habits, required energy and discipline necessary for the serious composer in our society,” he wrote on his faculty page, which noted that he had written more than 280 works covering a range of genres.

As a teacher, composer and conductor, he leaves behind many musicians, students, colleagues and friends who valued his passion, teaching and humor. Surviving him are his wife of 65 years, three sons, two grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
