Ramadan and Finals Week

The approaching finals season differs from other, recent years in that our Muslim students will be fasting on the last two days of finals (Monday, May 6, and Tuesday, May 7). The Office of Religious and Spiritual Life and WORLD: The David and Leighan Rinker Center for International Learning would like to share how to best support Muslim students during this time:

A day in the life of a fasting student involves fasting with no food or drink from 4:30 a.m.-8 p.m., and waking before this time for a pre-dawn meal. Sunset (around 8 p.m.) is a time for prayer and the breaking of the fast, followed by evening prayers.

After fasting all day, the late afternoon can be a difficult time for students. Students may request to move an exam to an earlier time in the day to circumvent this challenge. Please consider making reasonable allowances for accommodations, given the struggle of a changed schedule and eating habits.
