Harry Louis Freund: Ancient Cultures of Latin America
June 14 – Aug. 4
Louis Freund was the artist-in-residence at Stetson University between 1949 and 1967 and acted as the chairman of the university’s art department for a decade. During his period at Stetson, Freund received grants which enabled him to travel to Central America and visit various historic sites and monuments from the indigenous civilizations of the Toltec, Mixtec and Zapotec. The trips that Freund took to Central America inspired new themes in his work, and he began depicting the monuments, relics and landscape of the ancient sites.
In 2000, the Stetson University Duncan Gallery of Art held a memorial exhibition in honor of Louis Freund and his passing the previous year. After nearly two decades in storage, Freund’s artwork in Stetson University’s collection will be mounted in the galleries once again for the public’s education and enjoyment.
