Stetson provides inclusive services for a diverse community

On Friday, May 13th, the Department of Education and Department of Justice released joint guidance in the form of a “Dear Colleague,” letter regarding the civil rights protections for transgender students. Stetson University is committed to providing all students with a safe and nondiscriminatory learning environment. We are reviewing the guidance and collaborating on ways to continue providing inclusive services for our diverse community. For more information and background on the guidance letter, visit the DOE Homeroom page.

Stetson University takes pride in being a culture focused on diversity and inclusion. Our programs and services include the option for students, faculty and staff to use a preferred name and gender-neutral bathrooms and housing options. We currently extend options to use a preferred name in areas such as identification cards, email address, and general university communication. Preferred name requests may be made with the Registrar’s Office.

The Cross Cultural Center, located on the DeLand campus, offers the Safe Zone initiative, which actively addresses and fosters programming supporting LGBTQIA* identities. Our Safe Zone training includes advocacy training to increase insight into personal and cultural bias, increase awareness on impact of bias when interacting with LGBTQIA* individuals, increase comfort in discussing systematic oppression, acquire skills and knowledge to increase ability to advocate, and increase understanding that being an ally or advocate is an action process that is ongoing.

Should you have any questions, comments, or want to discuss the guidance further, our staff members are available for you.
