Symphony Orchestra Friday – Shostakovich’s 9th and Concerto Competition Winners
Stetson University Symphony Orchestra presents a concert in Lee Chapel on Friday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m., beginning with Verdi’s dramatic Prelude to his opera Ernani and ending with the exhilarating 9th Symphony of Shostakovich, written at the end of World War II. As you listen, you can imagine the composer poking his tongue at the failed Nazi attempt at world domination and specifically that of the Soviet Union. This concert highlights the winners of the annual concerto competition. Clarinetist Victoria Buffkin plays Weber’s 2nd Clarinet Concerto featuring its fizzing, champagne-like last movement and in contrast, mezzo-soprano Kyrsten Chambers sings the great aria from Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, Erbarme dich, which also showcases violinist Rebeca Baquerizo.
Anthony Hose conducts a concert that is not to be missed.
