Moot Court team sweeps all awards in tax competition
Stetson’s team of Erik Banuchi, John Bartel, and Omar Hussein not only won the 2021 National Tax Moot Court Competition, but the team also won the Best Brief Award, and Hussein won the Best Oralist Award.
The National Tax Moot Court Competition, sponsored by the Tax Section of The Florida Bar, started in the 1980s. Stetson has won the competition eight times; the first time in 1984. Only once before—in 2001—has a Stetson team swept all three awards.
It is a challenging competition, as the judges in the early rounds are tax attorneys, Internal Revenue Service attorneys, and attorneys from the Tax Section of Department of Justice. In the final round of the competition, the advocates had the opportunity to argue in front of judges from the United States Tax Court.
“The judges praised our advocates on their high level of advocacy and skill, as well as their outstanding knowledge of the law and the record and their ability to respond to the judges’ questions and pivot back into their arguments,” said Professor Brooke J. Bowman, director of Moot Court Board.
