|Event: Lambda- …And Stay Out! Florida’s Queer Youth and the Education System|
|Event Date:||October 11, 2017|
|Time:||12:05 PM - 12:55 PM|
National Coming Out Day is an annual event in the LGBTQ+ community in which folks who are in the closet are given an opportunity to step out of the closet and become themselves. Especially for many young people, this can be a scary, but rewarding rite of passage.
However, for many other young people, the fear of coming out is validated by finding that their community declines to offer them the resources they need to succeed. Anecdotally, here in Florida many young queer people feel they do not have access to those resources, and leave the state at their first opportunity, bringing their passions and skills to other communities.
…And Stay Out! will be a panel discussion addressing how Florida’s education system plays a role in connecting, or failing to connect, young queer Floridians to the resources they need to thrive in their home state, and how our State can do better for these students.
