They may originate from a community’s customs and practical needs, but they develop into sophisticated and intricate arts. During this class, you will experience the fascinating world of Russian folk art, learn about diverse craft traditions, see a collection of authentic artifacts, and create your own designs.

February 23 - Understanding Ukraine Conflict between Russia and Ukraine is all over the news these days--but didn’t these countries used to be friends? We’ll talk about the history of the relationship between Russia and Ukraine, we’ll delve into Soviet nationality policy, and we’ll explore Ukraine--land of Cossacks, crossroads, and centuries of conflict.

March 30- Balkan BeatsWhat do you know about the Balkans? This class will introduce you to the world of the former Yugoslavia. In particular, the war here (1991-2001) was the deadliest interethnic conflict in Europe since World War II, and it was fought not only in military battles, but also with daily broadcasts of popular music. Come and learn about the lesser known story of the Yugoslav Wars and immerse yourself in the sounds of the fierce cultural battle between rock ‘n’ roll, pop, and turbo-folk (the region’s unique formula of kitsch, folk music, western pop, and Turkish melodies).

April 27- Decoding the DumplingFood unites us all. Preparing, eating, and thinking about a dish is a way to unfurl the world. Come make, cook and taste that most quintessential of Russian dishes: the pirozhok. We’ll fill these pastries with varieties of sweet and savory insides and we’ll enjoy Russian tea.

May 18- Dancing Across Russia and ballet are inseparable. Yet watching a performance of The Nutcracker has become a part of the American holiday tradition. So how did a Russian ballet become part of Americana? You will explore the world of Russian dance from its roots to modern performance halls across the globe. Former actress and dancer Dr. Mayhill Fowler is now a leading expert on Soviet performance—and may even teach you to pirouette.
