Service with National Organizations: Following Disciplinary Leads

Unlike most specialists, I do not have one group that is my disciplinary home base; instead, my intellectual "home" is in the linkage that I make among the specialties. In taking this approach, I am not only pursuing my vocation, but also keeping true to the spirit of William James, who worked before disciplinary specialization, and following his questions wherever they would lead. In our time, the closest professional label for my work is Cultural and Intellectual History, meaning that I trace American thoughts and values as expressed in cultural forms ranging from formal writing to political slogans and the designs and images that speak without words.’
