There’s an open seat up for grabs on the DeLand City Commission, and four citizens have stepped forward to fill it. Join The West Volusia Beacon and Stetson University for an opportunity to get to know the candidates for Seat 2 at a free forum, 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18.
The event will take place in Rinker Auditorium inside Stetson University’s Lynn Business Center, 345 N. Woodland Blvd. Free parking is available in the lot east of the Lynn Business Center, off of East Michigan Avenue.
Seat 2 on the City Commission came up for grabs after incumbent City Commissioner Charles Paiva decided not to run for re-election. Jeff Hunter, Voloria Manning, Buz Nesbit and Kevin Reid are the four candidates in the running for the seat.
In advance of the forum, readers are invited to submit questions for the candidates via email to email@example.com. Audience members will also be able to submit questions on index cards that will be provided at the event.
The Beacon asks that readers submit only questions that can be answered by all candidates, rather than questions aimed specifically at one candidate. Time to meet individually with the candidates is planned after the forum, which is expected to run 6-7:30 p.m.
“We consider it a core part of our mission to inform the public about local elections,” said Beacon publisher Barb Shepherd, who will moderate the forum. “The DeLand City Commission’s decisions and actions affect all of our lives daily here in DeLand,” she continued. “We’re grateful to be able to host this forum, and we sure appreciate the participation of Stetson University and the candidates.”
