Spooky Stories

Spooky Stories! Writing Scary Fiction:
Ever have a story, novel, or movie give you the shivers or make your heart start pounding? How do authors do that to us? This course will examine the different variations of horror stories and their construction and then delve into the tools authors use to create scenes of suspense, terror, and… well, horror. We might just end up scaring ourselves!
(Grades 4 - 12)

About the Instructor

David Lee Finkle began his writing and cartooning career in Kindergarten during fire safety week when he was asked to draw a picture of what students should do if the school catches fire and in response drew a picture of children roasting marshmallows over the smoldering embers of the school. Amazingly, he went on to become a teacher and is currently a high school Language Arts teacher in Florida. His comic strip about teaching middle schoolers, "Mr. Fitz", has been running in Volusia County newspapers and online since 2000 (he has now drawn over 5,000 strips). His first novel, "Making My Escape", about an overly imaginative middle-schooler, was published in 2002. His Scholastic Professional books for teachers, Writing Extraordinary Essays and Teaching Students to Make Writing Visual and Vivid were published in 2007 and 2009.
