Make Blinis for Maslenitsa
March 13 is the last day Orthodox believers can eat any animal products, aka the END OF MASLENITSA. How can we use up the remaining eggs, milk and butter? I know! Make your family a Russian brunch! In one hour, we'll fry a few dozen bliny (Russian pancakes), simmer a pint of strawberry jam, and tell some history and stories about the folk holiday Maslenitsa (roughly equivalent to Lent in Western churches). You'll get an easy-to-follow recipe, a (short!) list of necessary ingredients and some suggestions on how to serve your creation! Collaborative and dynamic, you'll learn some basic skillet skills and about Russian foodways with Professor Michael Denner, Russian Studies.
Appropriate for Grades 5-12, family participation welcome
