Stetson's Three-Year Residency Requirement

Stetson University is proud of both its residential campus and its tradition of a vibrant campus community. The on-campus experience provides residential students with a number of benefits not available to commuter students, including support from residential staff that live and work in our buildings alongside our residents, access to university resources and academic buildings just a short walk from their home-on-campus, and opportunities to build relationships within the large campus community. In addition, national research shows that students living on campus have higher grade point averages, higher graduation rates, and greater involvement in university and student organizations. Therefore, Stetson has a three-year residency requirement in which all students are required to live on campus for the first three years of their enrollment at the university.

Exceptions to the residency requirement may be granted to those students who satisfy one or more of the residency exemption criteria on or before August 1st AND submit the Request for Residency Exemption found on Housing Central.

Continuing students interested in living off-campus while attending Stetson can learn more about the Request for Residency Exemption.

Requests for Special/ADA Housing Accommodation

After completing a housing application, students who are seeking additional consideration in the housing assignment process or reasonable requests for modifications to their housing assignment must submit a Request for Special/ADA Accommodation found on the Housing Central Home Page.

  • Requests for Special/ADA Accommodation submitted by the Priority Deadline of March 1 will be provided with a housing assignment by Residential Living and Learning that meets their specified needs prior to Housing Self-Selection taking place in April. These students will not participate in Self-Selection.
  • Requests for Special/ADA Accommodation submitted after the Priority Deadline of March 1 will be reviewed following Housing Self-Selection in April. Students eligible to participate in Self-Selection may attempt to select a space in residential housing that meets their accommodation needs. If they are unable to do so, an appropriate housing assignment will be provided after Housing Self-Selection on a rolling basis throughout the month of May, June and July.

Requests for Animals-in-Residence

Stetson University provides a unique experience allowing students to live with their animals on campus. There are four different categories of Animals approved by Residential Living and Learning; Pets, Emotional Support Animals, Service Animals and Service Dogs-In-Training. All animals living on campus must be approved through a request process. Students wishing to bring an animal to campus must submit the Request for Animal-in-Residence found on their Housing Central Home Page.

Emotional Support and Service Animals may live in any residential building, however, we do encourage students eligible to participate in Housing Self-Selection to choose an assignment in an Animal-Friendly Housing Location.

Pets and Service Dogs-in-Training will only be approved to live in Animal-Friendly Housing. Therefore, incoming students eligible to participate in Housing Self-Selection should make every effort to select a room in one of our three Animal-Friendly Housing locations during Housing Self-Selection. If Animal-Friendly Housing is not available during the self-selection process, the student should select an available space outside of Animal-Friendly Housing. The student's Request for Animal-in-Residence will remain in submitted status and, should space in Animal-Friendly Housing come available at a later date, the student will be offered a reassignment.

Learn more about Animal-Friendly Housing locations, university and Residential Living and Learning animal policies, and the Request for Animal-in-Residence.

Residential Learning Program Housing

Residential Learning Program Applications for Incoming Students are Due April 1.

Incoming students accepted into the Living Well and Women's Leadership Residential Learning Programs (RLPs) will be provided housing assignments in the residential buildings hosting these RLPs. Assignments will be provided prior to the Housing Self-Selection process in April. Applications for these Residential Learning Programs can be found on students' Housing Central Home Page. Learn more about the Residential Learning Programs at Stetson University.

Who is eligible to participate in Housing Self-Selection?

Participation for Housing Self-Selection for Fall 2021 will be determined by Stetson's Three-Year Residency Requirement and the date the Housing Application is submitted.

Students Required to Live On Campus for Fall 2021/Spring 2022

  • All students admitted to the university in the Summer 2019 term or after have not yet satisfied the three-year residency requirement and are therefore required to live on campus for the Fall 2021/Spring 2022 academic year.  A student required to live on campus that submits a Housing Application by March 1 will be automatically entered into the Housing Self-Selection process taking place in April.

Students NOT Required to Live On Campus for Fall 2021/Spring 2022

  • All students admitted to the university prior to the Summer 2019 term have satisfied the three-year residency requirement and are no longer required to live on campus.  A student no longer required to live on campus that submits a Housing Application by March 1 will be entered into a lottery in which 100 students will be selected randomly to participate in Housing Self-Selection taking place in April.  Students selected to participate in self-selection will be able to pull one other student no longer require to live on campus into the self-selection process as their preferred roommate by creating a roommate group in Housing Central.  Roommate groups can, of course, also include students required to live on campus.

Creating a Roommate Group

If a student has found a roommate they would like to live with, they must create a Roommate Group in Housing Central.  Forming your roommate group is easy! Simply visit Housing Central, click on Roommates at the top of the page, select the Fall 2021 term and enter your preferred roommate's Roommate Code found at the top right corner of all students' Housing Central Home Page.  An invitation will be sent via email with a private link to join the roommate group.  Students can click on the link to accept the invite.  Students without a preferred roommate can even browse resident profiles to find find a good roommate match!

Remember, all students must have an approved Housing Application in order to create or join a roommate group.
