Course Overview This course is an elective for students working on a degree in mathematics or related fields, and for others who are simply interested. The prerequisites are Introduction to Logic and Proof (MS 255), Calculus II (MS 202), and a willingness to think abstractly and work diligently. The emphasis is on theory. By now you should be discovering and writing proofs with some facility.
The text is Patty, Foundations of Topology. The book is currently out of print, but copies have been located and are available in the book store. Please read the book as well as participating in class.
Grading Your grade will be based on two in-class tests (25% each), homework (25%), and a final exam (25%).
Policies and Due Dates You must take the major tests during the scheduled class time unless you have a valid excuse cleared with me ahead of time. Test dates are Thursday 2/19, Thursday 3/25 , and (final exam) Saturday 5/1 8-10 am. Homework must be submitted on time. I support the Stetson Honor System.
Communication Please participate in class. Except for the first day, you are expected to read and think about the section to be discussed ahead of time. Make use of my office hours to ask more questions, make comments, and just converse. See my contact information above. If you ask me to send grades to you via email, I will do so through Blackboard, which you can configure for any email address you choose.
