The Writing Program at Stetson

The Writing Program at Stetson University

A Welcome Message from the Director

Welcome to the Writing Program at Stetson. Housed in the Department of English in Flagler Hall, our mission is to develop, through the Writing courses and the writing-intensive atmosphere of our First Year and Junior Seminars, the rhetorically effective, personally persuasive, logically coherent writing skills expected of Stetson University's graduates.

The Writing Program offers two Writing courses, ENGL 100 College Writing and ENGL 101 Writing and Rhetoric.  Each course teaches skills that are important to doing well at Stetson and beyond: critical thinking, rhetorical dexterity, audience analysis, and research skills.

We offer small, 16-student classes so that students get personalized, one-on-one attention from their professors. Each of us brings years of teaching to the classroom to ensure a great learning experience for students.

Among our distinguished teaching faculty are winners of awards for teaching excellence, authors of textbooks and handbooks, scholars in rhetoric, composition, and a range of literary genres, and creative and non-fiction authors. Take advantage of these small classes to hone your skills at effective communication. Don't be afraid to drop by our office hours to say hello and to get additional help with your writing assignments; our doors are open to you.

The Writing Program also supports the University's writing-intensive First Year Seminars and Junior Seminars. By encouraging a writing-rich academic environment into and beyond the first year, the Writing Program fosters the development of the essential writing skills: clarity, focus, development, an individual and engaging voice, and an awareness of the needs of an educated population.

To support students in their efforts, the Stetson University Writing Center offers regular hours every week. Directed by Dr Michael Barnes, this tutoring lab is one of the most popular on campus: tutors offer assistance and guidance during all phases of a writing project. Appointments are available via appointment or by dropping in at Flagler 209.

The links to the left will help you navigate through the Writing Program resources. If you have questions, comments, or suggestions, I hope you'll contact me at 386.822.7722 or by email at writingprogram@stetson.edu.

Welcome to Stetson!
