Stetson University Values Council 2008-2009
The Stetson University Values Council theme for the 2008-2009 academic year is “Tradition and Innovation.” Theme events are sponsored by the seven councils of the Values Council and will include guest lectures, book discussions and other venues. Guest speakers include Kathryn Bogle, author of Hooking Up; Stetson Law alumnus J. Brent Walker, a First Amendment legal expert; and Dr. Michael Kinnamon, the new General Secretary of the National Council of Churches.
Professors and academic programs are urged to partner with the Values Council to make theme events attractive and educational for students; and to encourage students to attend, and even lead, book discussions of Ian Buruma and Avishai Margalit’s Occidentalism: The West in the Eyes of Its Enemies; Charles Maier’s Among Empires: American Ascendancy and Its Predecessors; and David Korten’s The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community.
"The Values Council chairs believe this theme is particularly appropriate in a time of reflections on the past and transitions into the future in the university’s history," said Values Council Chair Donald Musser, senior professor of Religious Studies. The seven values chairs are Professors Mary Pollock (Gender Equity), Dixon Sutherland (Ethical Decision-Making), Greg Sapp (Community Service) and Anne Hallum (Environmental Responsibility); Deans Grady Ballenger (Health and Wellness) and Leonard Nance (Diversity); and Chaplain Michael Fronk (Spiritual Life).
