Stetson’s Student Government Association will relocate temporarily to Elizabeth Hall during winter break and make room for a Coffee Kiosk to open during the renovation of the Carlton Union Building.

Al Allen, left, associate vice president for Facilities Management at Stetson University, and Matt Adair, director of Project and Construction Management, talk in October about the plans for the Carlton Union Building renovation and expansion.

The CUB is undergoing a $30 million renovation and expansion that will add more meeting space for students and offices for student organizations, expand the Commons dining hall, and add a wall of glass across the east wall that will overlook a new patio dining area and green space. The project will occur in phases through 2019.

Over winter break, the SGA offices will be relocated to Elizabeth Hall Suite 112. Then, the construction company will convert the former SGA offices into a Coffee Kiosk. The Coffee Kiosk will open Feb. 1, 2017, and temporarily replace the Coffee Shop, which will close Friday, Jan. 27, said Al Allen, associate vice president for Facilities Management.

“The Coffee Shop as we know it will come offline at the end of January,” he said. “There will be only a few days between the time when the Coffee Shop closes and the Coffee Kiosk begins serving the campus community. The Hat Rack and Einstein Bros. Bagels will be open and serve coffee, as will the Commons.”

When the Coffee Shop closes, its furniture will be moved to the Faculty Lounge on the first floor of the CUB. That space will be converted on Jan. 30, 2017, into a space for the campus community to eat meals, and where students can gather and study during the CUB construction project. The Commons Dining Room will remain open for the campus community.

Conference Room 204 in the Carlton Union Building will be available for Faculty Senate meetings during the renovations.

To provide dining services while the current kitchen and serving areas are being expanded and renovated, a temporary kitchen will be constructed just north of Conrad Hall, east of the CUB, and the current Coffee Shop will be converted into a serving area. Construction of the temporary kitchen already has started. The conversion of the current Coffee Shop into a serving area will begin in February 2017, and that required the Coffee Shop to be relocated.

The temporary kitchen and serving area will be ready for use by people who attend Stetson’s summer conferences in June and for the beginning of the fall semester 2017. The temporary kitchen and serving area will be used by the campus community until August 2018, when the new kitchen and dining spaces are complete.

Carlton Union Building
Students eat lunch outside the Carlton Union Building this week as work continues to expand and renovate the 59-year-old building.

The 59-year-old CUB has served the campus very well, Allen said, but it is time to expand and renovate the building. The expanded CUB will include more dining space, and an outdoor dining patio on the east side of the building overlooking a beautiful green space. The expansion will also provide space for student organizations, Student Government offices, Student Life staff, meeting rooms, additional restrooms and elevators.
