A Concert of Music by African American Composers

Tuesday, February 23  

7:30 p.m., Lee Chapel, Elizabeth Hall

In celebration of Black History Month, the Stetson University School of Music presents a concert featuring music from African-American composers. It will be led by Stetson faculty Jane Christeson, mezzo-soprano; Kristie Born, piano; Tammy Miller, piano; and Michael Rickman, piano. They will be joined by students David Peralta, baritone and Christopher Hickey, tenor. The program will conclude with a performance by the Stetson University Concert Choir conducted by Timothy Peter. The program includes Three Inventions by Ulysses Kay; Love Let the Wind Cry…How I Adore Thee by Undine Smith Moore; Three Dream Portraits by Margaret Bonds; and Way Over in Beulah Lan’ by J. Rosamund Johnson.

The Stetson University Jazz Ensemble begins its spring concert series on a high note (literally) as we welcome three-time Grammy nominee Bobby Shew to Stetson. A veteran first-call studio musician, Bobby has toured and recorded with a veritable who’s who of the music and entertainment industry. As a jazz trumpeter, he has performed with artists such as Horace Silver, Bud Shank, Art Pepper, Louie Bellson, and Carl Fontana, in addition to several recordings under his own name. The jazz ensemble opens the evening with selections from jazz masters Thad Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, and Benny Carter. Bobby’s artistry will be on display as he collaborates with our musicians on works that include Dizzy Gillespie’s Night in Tunisia, Clifford Brown’s Joy Spring, Pat Metheny’s Always and Forever, and Bobby’s own composition, Nadalin.

The University Symphonic Band shares the mission of Stetson University by presenting inspiring, engaging, and exciting concerts that share the joy of music and the transformative concert experience. The program for this concert tour includes Aegean Festival Overture by Andreas Makris; Lux Aurumque by Eric Whitacre; Fascinating Ribbons by Joan Tower; Concerto for Clarinet  by David Maslanka; and La Fiesta Mexicana by H. Owen Reed.

Unless otherwise noted, admission is complimentary. For ticketed events, general admission tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and $5 for area students.
