Freshman Ashly Smith hit her first career home run Tuesday, a three-run blast to right-center field.

Freshman Ashly Smith hit a three-run home run in game one and Jessica Griffin smashed a two-run shot in game two as Stetson swept a doubleheader from visiting Oakland 4-1 and 6-1 Tuesday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.

Molly Shasteen also went 4-for-4 at the plate as the Hatters improved to 8-4 overall and 5-0 at home this season.

Smith’s home run was the first of her career and came with two on and one out in the third inning of game one.

“I was just trying ot be aggressive, because I have been hesitant swinging lately,” Smith said.  “I tried to get the ball out front.  She threw it down the middle so it just worked.  It felt really good.”

Brooke Hutto (4-1) went the distance to earn her fourth win of the season.  She allowed just one run and four hits while striking out a season-high six.

The Hatters split game two in the circle, with Tori Perkins working the first two innings, Curstin Taylor (1-2) pitching a scoreless third to earn her first career win, and Chelsea Hostetler tossing four shutout innings to record the save.

“I thought we pitched well,” Frank Griffin said.  “We had to rotate some players in and out to see who was on tonight.  In the end, Chelsea finished the second game very well, and we scored some runs.  That was the big issue right there.  We left some runners on base, but I was real happy with our offense.”

All nine players recorded hits in the doubleheader, including two in each game from Shasteen.  Freshman Jazmynn Jesse collected her first career hit in game two.

“I was happy to see we were getting some hits from the middle of our line-up down,” Frank Griffin said.  “That’s something we haven’t seen, but they are getting some at-bats and starting to feel more comfortable. I think it is only going to get better.”

Jessica Griffin had three RBI in game two, including an RBI single in the third inning and a two-run home run in the fifth.

Oakland, the 2015 Horizon League Champions, fell to 1-5.

The Hatters will host the Stetson Invitational this weekend at Patricia Wilson Field.  Southern Illinois, Colgate, Pitt, and Providence will provide the competition.
