Internationally renowned trumpeter Bobby Shew will join the Stetson University Jazz Ensemble in concert for the first of its spring concert series, Wednesday, Feb. 24, 7:30 p.m., in the Stetson Room, second floor of the Carlton Union Building, 131 E. Shew is a three-time Grammy nominee and a veteran first-call studio musician, who has toured and recorded with a veritable who’s who of the music and entertainment industry. As a jazz trumpeter, he has performed with artists such as Horace Silver, Bud Shank, Art Pepper, Louie Bellson, and Carl Fontana, in addition to several recordings under his own name.

His studio career includes TV shows like “Hawaii 5-0,” “Streets of San Francisco,” “Bob Newhart,” “Mary Tyler Moore,” “Happy Days,” “Laverne and Shirley,” and “Eight is Enough.” Movie soundtracks include “Grease,” “Grease II,” “Rocky” and “Rocky II,” “Six-Pack,” “The Muppet Movie,” “The Drivers” and “Taxi.” He endorses Yamaha equipment and remains a popular figure in their ad campaigns.

He is the author of two books, and served in numerous artist-in-residencies worldwide in Germany, Nethlerlands, Belgium, Japan, Canada and Austria. In 2014, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for Performance and Education from the International Trumpet Guild as well as from the Jazz Educators Network.

Under the leadership of Music Professor Patrick Hennessey, Ph.D., director of Stetson University’s Jazz Ensemble, Stetson’s 17-member big band will open the evening with selections from jazz masters Thad Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, and Benny Carter. Shew’s artistry will be on display as he collaborates with Stetson’s musicians on works that include Dizzy Gillespie’s Night in Tunisia, Clifford Brown’s Joy Spring, Pat Metheny’s Always and Forever, and Shew’s own composition, Nadalin.
