Saunders, Bey Named Atlantic Sun Player, Newcomer of the Week

Stetson University junior guard Brianti Saunders, from Hilliard, Fla., has been named Atlantic Sun co-Player of the Week, and junior forward Breana Bey, from Jersey City, N.J., has been named the league’s Newcomer of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday, Dec. 21.

Saunders set a school single-game record by scoring 40 points in Stetson’s 79-57 win over Georgia Southern on Sunday.  She was 12-for-16 from the field, 4-for-6 from behind the arc, and 12-for-13 from the free throw line to surpass a record that had stood for 29 years. She also picked up eight rebounds in 35 minutes of action.

Earlier in the week, Saunders had 18 points in Stetson’s 52-49 win at UNCW. She is now averaging 18.8 points per game on the season, good for second in the conference and 42nd in the NCAA.

It is the second straight week and fifth time in her career that Saunders has been named the A-Sun Player of the Week.

Bey, meanwhile, earned the league’s Newcomer of the Week award for the third time this season. She collected a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double against Georgia Southern Sunday, adding five assists in 34 minutes. She scored eight points with four rebounds at UNCW on Tuesday.

Bey is averaging 13.5 points and 7.8 rebounds on the season. Her .598 field goal percentage leads the Atlantic Sun and ranks 22nd in the NCAA.
