womens tennis copyStetson women’s tennis picked up its sixth straight win with a 7-0 victory over Oakland, Thursday at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

The win improves the Hatters to 7-1 on the season. Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote was pleased with his young squad’s effort against the Golden Grizzlies.

“We improved again in singles play against Oakland,” said Pilote. “They have improved since our meeting last year, but our young team was able to deliver another good performance.”

Stetson opened the match by winning the doubles point. The No. 1 duo of freshmen Alizee Michaud, pictured, and Ashley Dean picked up a 6-1 win, while the No. 2 tandem of Isabella Fernandez and Eveline Lepinay picked up a 6-4 win. Oakland won the No. 3 doubles match as Arijana Korac and Maja Salibasic were downed, 6-4.

Singles play saw more dominating performances by the Hatters. Michaud ran her season record to 7-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1. Carolina Meregalli followed at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-1 win.

Lepinay clinched the match for Stetson with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. Fernandez, the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference player of the week, earned a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2.

Dean won her match at No. 4 by a 7-5, 6-0 count and Korac closed the day for Stetson with a 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) win at No. 4.

Up next for Stetson is a match up with former A-Sun foe College of Charleston at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

“Now we turn our attention to an old nemesis, the College of Charleston,” said Pilote. “Year in and year out they are one of the top programs the country, a team that we have never defeated in our history. We will have to elevate our level of play to be able to compete with them.”
